The Teenage Entrepreneur
While most 16-year-olds were figuring out high school life, Gaurav was busy designing a stock market board game. Not exactly your typical teenage hobby. This wasn’t just for fun , the game caught the eye of Leo Toys, who bought it and went on to sell an impressive 50,000 pieces across the country.
Still in his school days, Gaurav created WWF trump cards that also hit that 50,000 sales mark. Looking back, you can see the signs of someone who thinks differently, someone who spots opportunities where others see ordinary things.
College,
A Credit Card, and Consortium Gifts
Most college freshmen worry about classes and campus life. Gaurav? He was launching what would become his life’s work. With just Rs. 10,000 borrowed from a credit card, a gutsy move for anyone, let alone a first year student, he founded Consortium Gifts.
The early days weren’t glamorous. The company started by making gym gloves and computer mouse pads. Not exactly revolutionary products, but Gaurav saw potential where others might not have bothered.
Growing Pains and Growing Gains
Like most startups, Consortium began small, really small. Operations ran from Gaurav’s home office. But something was working. By 1999-2000, they landed orders from Maruti, a game-changing moment that validated what Gaurav was building.
As business picked up, Consortium outgrew its humble beginnings. First came a move to a slightly bigger place in Bharat Nagar, New Friends Colony. Then to Okhla. Eventually to Noida. Each new address marked not just a change in location but a company hitting its stride.
From Mouse Pads to Market Leader
Today, Consortium Gifts has become one of those success stories other entrepreneurs talk about. What started with simple products has evolved into a company that major businesses trust for their gifting needs. The journey from making mouse pads to becoming a preferred corporate gifting partner for many leading Indian companies didn’t happen overnight, it’s been a steady climb built on understanding what businesses really want when they give gifts.
Beyond Just Business
For Gaurav, entrepreneurship wasn’t just about building one company. He went on to establish the Gaurav Bhagat Academy, sharing what he’d learned with others looking to create their own path. His involvement with IGC, where he serves as president, shows someone who believes in giving back to the entrepreneurial community.
What’s next? Gaurav talks about launching more companies in the future. That teenage entrepreneur spirit hasn’t dimmed with age or success – if anything, it seems to have grown stronger.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
When you trace the line from that 16 year old game designer to the founder running a leading corporate gifting company, you see something important about entrepreneurship. It’s rarely ever a straight path. It’s about starting with whatever you have , recognizing opportunities, and having the guts to keep going even when the next step isn’t clear.
Gaurav’s journey reminds us that behind every company is a person who simply started somewhere, anywhere, and kept moving forward.
